Andrea Sayers
Hello, I’m Andrea. Every morning, I start my day with a cup of tea and a drawing, often in the greenhouse. Most days I go for a walk, and enjoy noticing little details and mundane scenes that most people probably don’t pay much attention to. I take lots of photographs so I can remember and think about these things once I am back home. Discarded objects sometimes come home tucked into my pockets. These photographs and objects often become drawings or little handmade characters that keep me company in the studio. My drawings and paintings have a sort of illustrative quality which makes me think of images from a storybook that doesn’t actually exist.
Making these pictures is like a diary of my tiny adventures, carrying stories and memories and little sparks of a deeper conversation with the world around me. People often tell me I have a wonderful imagination. But to me, it’s more like seeing hidden realms that quietly exist behind the everyday one. I’m not creating these stories; they’re simply revealing themselves to me, and my drawings are the way I translate that hidden world onto paper.
