A watercolour painting showing a scene of Edinburgh's old town at night. Tall old brick buildings lean in towards a cobble street, which curves away to the left up a hill. Christmas lights are hanging over the street between the buildings, glowing next to a set up steps squeezed between two buildings. Some buildings have a yellow glow from upward pointing lights, and you can see black iron balconies in front of some windows. There are sketchy painted people walking down the street, and a mini in the left foreground. The sky is a deep blue, and almost black above the tallest tower-like building.

Charlie Mathews

I use my art to show people the world that I see: the intricate little details, and the queerness and beauty of nature.

My main materials are watercolour paints, oil pastels, and wool roving for needle felting, but I dabble in sketching and pyrography as well.

My favourite paintings to create are buildings and unusual views. I love letting my mind focus for hours on each brick and cobble, using the tiniest paintbrush that I can, in a way that watercolours are probably not designed to be used. I also use watercolours in a more conventional way, illustrating a children’s book this year.
In the recent years, I have fallen in love with needle felting. I make garlands of pumpkins, mushrooms, and ghosties, and I also sculpt creatures, inspired by oddities and mythology.
