Some lines from Life Goes On, my WIP novel.

Dr Jessica Secmezsoy-Urquhart

I work across history, disability studies, filmmaking, and creative writing. Across all my research and creative work I consistently focus on disability, neurodiversity, marginalised identities, unique perspectives and how these identities have been represented historically and culturally.

My academic work centres on Renaissance disability history, especially the roles of disabled court entertainers, fools, dwarfs, and giants in the royal courts of England and Scotland. My filmmaking blends surrealism, disability politics, and personal experience. My first short film, Constant Companion, explored intrusive thoughts, trauma, and abuse through experimental storytelling. More recently, I have developed Superhuman, an autistic-led short film about disability benefits assessments and autistic identity in contemporary Britain which is currently on production hiatus. I am currently writing, Life Goes On, a magical realism novel on the Dickensian childhood of my dede/grandpa.
