Statement from Neuk Collective on the Closure of the Open Fund for Individuals
We are shocked and deeply saddened by Creative Scotland’s decision to close the Open Fund for Individuals indefinitely, starting on 30th August. This fund has been a vital support for many of us, helping us to pursue our creative work in ways that respect our unique needs and perspectives.
This decision is a serious setback for the most vulnerable and marginalised artists in our community. Neurodivergent and disabled artists, who already face many barriers to accessing and participating in the arts, will be hit especially hard. The Open Fund has given us the freedom and flexibility to develop our work outside of traditional institutions, which is often crucial for our creative processes.
Losing this funding not only threatens our ability to continue our individual work, but it also weakens the diversity and inclusivity of Scotland’s cultural scene. Without this support, many neurodivergent and disabled artists will struggle to find the resources they need, leading to a less vibrant and less representative arts sector.
We are particularly worried that this decision will widen the existing inequalities in the arts community. Only those with financial privilege will be able to afford to keep developing their art, further marginalising those from low-income backgrounds, including many neurodivergent and disabled individuals.
We urge Creative Scotland and the Scottish Government to reconsider this decision and to understand the unique challenges neurodivergent and disabled artists face. Any funding solutions must prioritise accessibility, fairness, and the well-being of all artists, especially those from underrepresented and marginalised groups.
We stand in solidarity with all artists affected by this decision and will continue to fight for a more inclusive and supportive arts sector. Our voices, stories, and creativity matter.
